Opinions.
I just posted this on my tumblr and here you have it on my blog too, yay.
The tumblr post: http://pirouettesfromwalkingstrangers.tumblr.com/post/45056300039/so-today-carrie-hope-fletcher-itswaypastmybedtime
So today Carrie Hope Fletcher (itswaypastmybedtime on YouTube) started a discussion about the last Becoming YouTube episode. Although I like most of Carrie’s content, I don’t agree with a lot of what she was saying and because I have opinions and an internet connection I decided to type them out. I’m going to tag this, because I don’t think it’s very.. fair (?) to write this thing about her but not tag her.
“Still in shock at how many girls are still vocally battering
@benjamin_cook because of BY Ep 7 on Girls on YT. I thought it was brilliant!!” – tweet by @CarrieHFletcher
“If you disagreed with Ben in BY ep 7, prove him wrong! Make the best content you possibly can and join the ranks of popular male YTers!” – tweet by @CarrieHFletcher
Then she went on by saying this. This is exactly the problem. Female YouTubers make great content, of course there are some bad vloggers but there are also bad male vloggers. The quality of their content is as good as the content of male YouTubers, they just don’t get as much attention as male vloggers. This point is stated in about every Becoming YouTube discussion and in my opinion she completely misses the point of that discussion here.
“we DO have the same opportunities!” – tweet by @CarrieHFletcher
Female and male vloggers have the same opportunities on YouTube? I think not. It’s sad, but it’s just not true.
“If everyone on YouTube was making exceptional content the average sub count would be in the mils.” – – tweet by @CarrieHFletcher
Same thing as I said before. There are so many female vloggers who make amazing content and still their sub count is lower than some vloggers who make average content. This also applies to male vloggers of course, because besides making awesome content you also need some luck and good connections to get subs. Making exceptional and great content doesn’t mean you’ll automatically get a lot of subscribers.
Also I do remember that at one point she gave herself as an example of a female YouTuber with a large audience. Although I can’t find the tweet anymore so either she deleted it or I’ve dreamed this? And yes, there are big female YouTubers and she is one of them, but while I think Carrie’s content is good she got a lot of subs through having well known YouTube friends. I found her channel through Alex, and her good content made me stay, but without Alex (or any other YouTuber she collabs with) I wouldn’t have found it. This isn’t a bad thing, because that’s just how it goes and collabing is a nice way to attract more viewers. She also tweeted some other things about needing good content to attract subscribers, and that isn’t true. You can have amazing content, but you also need to have some good connections and a bit of luck, otherwise you won’t get a million (or even 100.000) subscribers.
This is just my opinion about these things, I’m really not the most qualified person to say this and the things I say have been said about a thousand of times. But voicing opinions is a good thing. (also English isn’t my first language sorry for any mistakes!)
(btw there was also a whole discussion about a facebookgroup for female vloggers, but since I’m not in that group I’m not gonna comment on that)
